Raw, Black, Blue

It feels - new. It's been a while since I've felt like this. Warm.

I don't recall ever being held this close. Not this way.

With my head on his chest, the echo of his heartbeat in my ear almost lulls me to sleep, but he clears his throat. "I dreamt a lot about getting chased by bullets. And I never could shake it", he says. "Sometimes it catches me. Sometimes it don't. I got used to it though, you know? Keeps me on my feet. Ready."

"Ready. Ready for what?", I asked

"Ready for anything."

Initially my story began as a short film, The Raw, which follows Keith, a newly hired response team member that assists a volatile neighborhood. My intent was to write from his point of view. Naturally, I was curious - two friends of mine, H.Z. and Jay, joined, a community response team, a non-profit organization funded by the city of San Francisco. They told me countless stories, many of which were of families torn apart by gang related deaths and mental illness. Jay was sent to prevent further retaliation between gang members and offer counseling. This young black man initially wanted to be a sheriff, which was something I struggled with understanding at the time.

I decided to develop a new character, Tamia, a young woman who just wants to live and love and change her world. Though the story is fictional, the photos are taken of San Francisco Bay Area communities Tamia revisits.

Along with my goal to publish Raw, Black and Blue as a book, I hope this opens up additional forums on social justice, self care and mental health.

about writer/photographer/filmmaker

My name is Shantre Pinkney and I am a filmmaker and photographer devoted to stories that entertain, inspire and empower people socially.

I'm inspired by hip-hop, jazz and New Wave cinema. I began my creative venture in New York and studied film-making in Atlanta, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. As a lover of non-traditional and inquisitive stories, I seek to raise dialogue between art and audience through the mediums of photography, film, and spoken word.

Previously, my Kickstarter funded photography exhibition, Lest We Forget: A Portrait of Bayview Hunters Point exhibited in San Francisco and Oakland galleries.

The types of projects I want to make are organic and communal. My motto is to create narratives of the people. I make films and shoot photography with the intent of inspiring us all through personal stories. I love the idea that a work of art can travel with audiences as a book and that I can connect with them in a way by touching and viewing the pages up close.
